thechoice-680x1020Another Nicholas Sparks adaptation is scheduled to begin production in the area this fall. Based on Sparks’ 2007 novel The Choice, this will follow hot on the heels of The Longest Ride, which is shooting in Wilmington this summer.

Sparks lives in North Carolina, and has set many of his books in the state. Of his eighteen published novels, eleven (including those currently in production) have been adapted into films. And of those, five have been filmed in North Carolina. (For those who are counting, it’s 2002′s A Walk to Remember, starring Mandy Moore; 2008′s Nights in Rodanthe, with Richard Gere and Diane Lane; 2010′s Dear John, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried; last year’s Safe Haven, with Julianne Hough; upcoming project The Longest Ride; and now, The Choice).

Films based on Sparks’ novels are dependable box office favorites. Collectively, they’ve earned approximately $750 million. And they’re important launchpads for up-and-coming stars like Seyfried and Tatum; or Liam Hemsworth in 2010′s The Last Song.

Because these films don’t typically rely on a lot of visual effects or big-name stars, they can be produced relatively inexpensively. (Compare Safe Haven’s $28 million budget to Iron Man 3′s $200 million.) That, and the enticing film incentives program, promise a healthy return investment for studios producing romantic dramas in this state.
